Break of Structure (BOS)

A Break of Structure (BOS) happens when price closes beyond a significant prior high or low, in the direction of the trend already in place. It is a continuation signal, not a reversal.

In an uptrend, a bullish BOS is the break of the last higher high: it confirms buyers are still in control. In a downtrend, it is the same on a lower low.

How to spot it: identify the last significant swing high of the current trend, draw a horizontal line at its peak, and wait. The BOS is valid when a candle actually closes above that line — not when a wick pokes through it. That distinction is not a technicality: a wick that clears the level without closing beyond it is very often a stop hunt, which is the exact opposite of a BOS.

The difference from a CHoCH fits in one sentence: a BOS goes with the trend and confirms it, a CHoCH goes against it and calls it into question. Confuse the two and you will read continuations as reversals — and enter at consistently the worst moment.

How to trade it? The BOS is not an entry signal in itself: entering on the break means buying the high of the move with a stop far away. The ICT sequence is different. The BOS confirms the bias; you then mark the value zone left behind by the impulsive move that caused the break (the order block or fair value gap just before it); and you wait for price to pull back into that zone to enter, with a stop just beyond.

The classic mistake: treating every small break as a BOS. On a low timeframe, price breaks micro-highs constantly. A BOS only carries weight if it breaks a swing point the market actually respected before — a level that produced a visible rejection, not an arbitrary high in the middle of a move.

Second trap: ignoring the higher timeframe. A bullish 5-minute BOS inside a bearish daily trend is still a counter-trend trade. It can be taken, but with a short target and reduced size — it is not the same trade as a BOS aligned across every timeframe.
