Power of Three and the Judas Swing: the day’s false start

Overnight, in the Asian session, price turns in a narrow range: accumulation. Then a fast move leaves the range on the wrong side and takes the stops resting beyond it: manipulation, the Judas Swing. Finally the day’s real move goes the other way: distribution.

The reference that separates the right side from the wrong one is the New York midnight open — ICT’s "true day open". A bullish day makes its Judas below that open, taking a low; a bearish day makes it above, taking a high. A sweep on the right side of the open is not a Judas.

Every day that closes above its open made a low somewhere, then a high. After the close, you can almost always call that low "the Judas". The frame therefore checks out almost every time in hindsight, and that is what makes it so convincing on the charts shown in courses.

In session, the question is a different one: price has just cleared the Asian high. The Judas of a bearish day, or the start of a bullish day that will never come back? Nobody knows while it happens. Hence the rule: no entry on the Judas itself, only after a close that proves the reversal.

Two windows, New York time: midnight to 5am for the London Judas, 9:30 to 10:30 for the New York one. The Judas must form on the wrong side of the midnight open and take a session liquidity — the Asian, previous-day, London or pre-open high or low.

Then the usual execution: a close beyond the last small high (or low) before the extreme, a fair value gap left by the move, a limit order in that FVG, a stop beyond the Judas extreme, and a target on the opposite liquidity known at the time of entry.

The model allows for one manipulation per day. Once a Judas has been confirmed — extreme, then a structure break the other way — the next sweep on the opposite side is no longer a manipulation: more often than not, it is the distribution moving on.

And some days simply have no Judas: they leave the midnight open and never come back, or they swing both ways, typically on Fed decision days. When you have to force the read to make it fit, it does not fit.
