Step 34
The swings that count
The ICT reading starts where module 6 stopped: of all the swing highs and swing lows, which ones must the market respect for the trend to hold?
The point that must hold
In an uptrend, the swing low that counts is the one the leg that broke the previous swing high started from. As long as it holds, the uptrend is intact; if it gives way on a close, the reading changes.
The small swing lows inside that leg can give way without consequence. In a downtrend, it is the mirror swing high. It is called the protected low (or protected high).
Two filters
- Size: the swing must be clear over at least two candles on each side, and stay visible when you zoom out.
- Consequence: a swing counts because it launched something. A swing low from which a clear move starts, breaking a swing high, showed there were buyers; an hour of hesitation in the middle of the night showed nothing.
Redone with every leg
When the uptrend breaks a new swing high, the swing low that counts moves up: it is now the one this last leg started from. Always know which point would invalidate the current reading.
The whole module depends on it: the break of structure (BOS) is measured against the last swing high that counts, the change of character (CHoCH) against the last swing low. Module 8 will show that stop orders pile up there.
Key pointIn an uptrend, the swing low that counts is the one the leg that broke the last swing high started from; in a downtrend, the mirror swing high. It changes with every new leg.
